Our verdict on Oscar

Oscar is an open-source, Django-based ecommerce framework for developers building custom online stores. It covers core commerce operations including catalogues, baskets, checkout, payments, shipping, orders, offers, vouchers, search and wishlists. Its configurable domain models make it suited to businesses with specialized product structures, order processing or business rules. Support for downloadable products, subscriptions and multilingual catalogues broadens its use beyond a basic physical-goods shop.

The platform’s ecosystem is oriented toward extension rather than plug-and-play deployment. Oscar includes a RESTful JSON API extension and payment gateway extensions, with integrations for PayPal, GoCardless, DataCash, Adyen and Elasticsearch. Multiple payment sources, fulfilment partners and stock records can support more complex operating models. A dashboard brings catalog, order, stock and offer management together, while wishlists and product availability alerts add customer-facing commerce features. These capabilities give development teams room to shape the store around their own architecture.

Oscar’s main trade-off is its hosting model and audience. It is self-hosted and presented as a developer framework, so organizations choosing it should be prepared to manage implementation and deployment rather than adopt a ready-made hosted storefront. It is a strong fit when extensibility, Django integration and domain-specific commerce workflows matter most. Teams seeking a hosted platform with a managed storefront experience, or a product with built-in AI features, should consider a different type of ecommerce solution.
