Our verdict on OruxMaps

For hiking, cycling, running, sailing, and skiing, OruxMaps combines a GPS map viewer with route planning and track tools. It supports Android and iOS, with online maps and offline files in formats including Mapsforge, GeoPDF, RMAP, MBTiles, and Garmin IMG. Users can record, import, export, and analyze GPS tracks, save waypoints and points of interest with attached media, and view relief and 3D maps using DEM files. Its range of outdoor functions makes it relevant to solo users and small teams who want mapping and GPS activity tools in one mobile app.

Map flexibility is a defining strength, but offline use depends on preparation. OruxMaps can download some online maps for offline use and can display offline map files; the official manual says the app does not include maps for offline browsing, so users must find or create their own. Route planning can use online and offline route-search engines, and following a route can trigger alerts when leaving it or approaching waypoints. Offline search and turn-by-turn navigation are not verified, so buyers who require either should compare alternatives before relying on the app for navigation.

The GPS and activity-sensor connections suit users with compatible external equipment. Supported devices include GPS, heart-rate, cadence, and ANT+ sensors, and listed integrations include Strava, MapMyTracks, and OpenStreetMap, among others. OruxMaps is a paid app, but its official website does not publish a pricing page; Google Play showed €5.49 in the Netherlands, and the price may vary by region. Email is the listed support channel. Choose it for configurable outdoor mapping, track management, and accessory connections; look elsewhere if included offline maps or verified offline turn-by-turn navigation are central requirements.
