OrkaJS review
An open-source TypeScript toolkit for custom LLM apps, deployed on your own infrastructure.

OrkaJS is an open-source TypeScript framework for developers building and operating custom LLM applications, rather than a hosted end-user product. Its modules cover retrieval-augmented generation, tool-using agents, multi-step and graph workflows, memory, multimodal processing, evaluation, and observability. The framework runs in Node.js or Bun projects and can be installed as a complete package or through selected @orka-js modules. It is aimed at JavaScript teams that want to assemble their own application workflows and operational controls.
Workflow and agent capabilities are a central strength. OrkaJS supports structured agents, including ReAct and Plan & Execute, alongside tools and policies, graph-based orchestration, and durable or resumable agents. RAG features include semantic search and vector-store adapters. Provider integrations include OpenAI, Anthropic, Mistral, Ollama, Google Gemini, Cohere, and Replicate; vector-store options include Pinecone, Qdrant, ChromaDB, and an in-memory store. OCR and document extraction, streaming, MCP, fine-tuning modules, and multimodal support extend the available building blocks. The breadth suits teams with varied application needs, though choosing and connecting modules is part of a developer-led approach.
Operational features include evaluation metrics and test runners, observability hooks, tracing, and OpenTelemetry support. Retries, fallbacks, timeouts, and circuit breakers provide controls for handling failures. OrkaJS is published under the MIT license and is self-hosted, so teams need to manage their own deployment rather than rely on a vendor-hosted service. Support channels are community and documentation, and GDPR is listed among its compliance attributes. Choose OrkaJS if your team wants an extensible TypeScript framework and can own application operations; consider a hosted application platform instead if managed deployment is a priority.
OrkaJS pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Graph orchestration, tool-using agents, and resumable workflows
- Provider and vector-store adapters plus RAG and conversation memory
- Evaluation, tracing, and resilience controls in modular packages
- Where it doesn't
- Self-hosted deployment only
- Requires developers to build and operate the application
- Support is through community resources and documentation
