OrientDB is an open-source multimodel database for applications that combine graph relationships with document storage. It is aimed at developers and organizations building self-hosted operational applications where graph traversal, document records, and transactional behavior belong in the same system. Community software is available across Windows, Linux/Unix, macOS, and any OS, while the product also offers an Enterprise edition for additional operational tooling.

Its standout capability is the combination of native graph and document models with SQL and Gremlin. ACID-compliant transactions support transactional workloads, while built-in traversal and path algorithms include Dijkstra and A*. Full-text Lucene indexing, geospatial data support, schema-less, schema-full, and schema-mixed modes, plus HTTP/REST and binary protocols give teams several ways to model and access data. The web-based Studio and command-line console also provide distinct administration and interaction paths.

OrientDB’s breadth is strongest inside the database itself rather than across a wide integration ecosystem. Distributed, multi-master architecture, graph traversal, document storage, and Enterprise features such as query profiling, clustering, auditing, metrics, incremental backups, and data import tools support more demanding deployments. However, self-hosted operation makes infrastructure ownership part of the decision, and the listed integrations are focused on Gremlin Server and Gephi. Choose OrientDB when an open-source graph-document database with SQL and Gremlin is the priority; choose another option when a broader platform ecosystem or documented vector-search workflow matters more.

OrientDB pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Native graph and document models with SQL and Gremlin support
    • ACID transactions plus built-in Dijkstra and A* algorithms
    • Community edition supports Windows, Linux/Unix, macOS, and any OS
  • Where it doesn't
    • Self-hosted deployment places infrastructure responsibility on the team
    • Integration coverage centers on Gremlin Server and Gephi
    • Less suited to applications requiring a documented vector-search workflow
