A capable free desktop hypervisor with broad host support and advanced VM controls.

Oracle VirtualBox is hosted virtualization software for developers, IT teams, and solution providers that need to run multiple operating systems at the same time. It supports Windows, macOS, Linux, and Oracle Solaris hosts, with both desktop management and API-based control. The free GPLv3 Base Package includes the core hypervisor features needed to create and run virtual machines, making VirtualBox a practical fit for local development, testing, training, and operating-system compatibility work.
Its feature set is broader than basic VM launch and shutdown. VirtualBox supports snapshots with branching and rollback, nested virtualization, virtual hardware configuration, networking, PXE boot, virtual USB, and hardware-accelerated 3D graphics for supported guests. Guest Additions add shared folders, clipboard sharing, and drag and drop. OVF import and export support helps with VM portability, while the Graphical Manager, VBoxManage command-line tool, headless interfaces, and API-based control accommodate both interactive and scripted administration. Oracle Cloud Infrastructure integration extends import and export workflows beyond the desktop.
The main pricing distinction is between the free Base Package and VirtualBox Enterprise. Enterprise adds a commercial license and support, the Extension Pack, and 24x7 Oracle support for the base package and Extension Pack. The Extension Pack is separately licensed from the GPLv3 base package and adds capabilities such as VRDP, webcam passthrough, disk-image encryption, and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure integration. VirtualBox is a strong choice for users who want broad desktop host coverage and substantial VM controls without paying for the base package. Teams needing commercial support or Extension Pack capabilities should evaluate Enterprise, while users on Arm hosts should account for guest and feature limitations.
