Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) is a clustered architecture option for Oracle Database workloads that need high availability, fault tolerance, and scale-out performance. Multiple database instances can access a shared database concurrently across clustered nodes. It is aimed at mission-critical enterprise applications, transactional workloads, analytical workloads, and other systems that require continuous operation. Deployment options span on-premises environments and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, while the listed platform is Linux.

RAC’s strongest capability is its clustering model. Organizations can add database nodes for horizontal scaling, distribute connections through connection load balancing, and use automatic workload failover when a clustered node fails. Fast connection failover and hot cluster failover support continuity during node problems. RAC also supports rolling database and application schema updates, which can help teams maintain clustered environments while applying changes. Parallelized queries, inserts, updates, and deletes across servers add processing options for workloads that can benefit from distributed execution.

The published licensing structure is perpetual rather than SaaS-based. The Named User Plus perpetual license and Processor perpetual license each include Oracle Real Application Clusters as an option. Oracle also lists separate software update and support amounts, and licensing varies by database offering and deployment. RAC does not include a free plan and is an Oracle Database option rather than an independent database product. Choose it when Linux-based Oracle Database clustering, failover, shared access, and rolling operations are central requirements. Consider an alternative if you need broader platform coverage, an open-source product, or a free entry tier.
