Ora2Pg review
A free command-line toolkit for assessed, scriptable Oracle-to-PostgreSQL migrations.

Ora2Pg is a free, open-source command-line migration tool for database administrators, consultants, and teams moving Oracle databases to PostgreSQL. It also supports MySQL, MariaDB, and Microsoft SQL Server sources. The workflow covers source scanning, migration cost and difficulty assessment, schema export, data export, conversion of selected procedural code, testing, and PostgreSQL loading. Windows and Linux are supported, and the self-hosted model suits teams that need locally installed, scriptable tooling for offline or assessment-led projects.
For migration planning, Ora2Pg provides assessment reports and exports a broad set of schema objects, including tables, views, sequences, indexes, constraints, and partitions. Data can be exported from full tables or selected with a WHERE clause. Output can be imported directly into PostgreSQL or written as loadable SQL files. Basic automatic PL/SQL-to-PL/pgSQL conversion helps establish a starting point, while migration testing and Oracle-to-PostgreSQL difference reporting provide checks during the transition. Integrations with PostgreSQL psql, PostGIS, Oracle FDW, and Pentaho Data Integrator extend its fit across database and data-integration workflows.
Ora2Pg is strongest when a technical team wants control over discovery, conversion, export, and validation without a license charge. Its broader source support can also help consultants handle migrations beyond Oracle. The main boundary is change data capture: Ora2Pg can create exports that record Oracle SCNs for use with an external CDC tool, but it does not apply post-initial-import changes itself. Teams requiring continuous replication should therefore choose an external CDC tool or HexaRocket instead. Choose Ora2Pg for free, self-hosted migration work with command-line control; choose another option when ongoing replication is central to the project.
Ora2Pg pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Free, open-source tooling for assessment-led migrations
- Exports schemas, selected data, and loadable SQL files
- Reports migration differences and performs basic PL/SQL conversion
- Where it doesn't
- Continuous replication requires an external CDC tool
- PL/SQL conversion is basic rather than comprehensive
- Self-hosted command-line workflows require database expertise
