Our verdict on OpenXava

OpenXava is an open-source Java framework for building business web applications from domain classes and business logic. It generates user interfaces and database logic with Java, JPA, and annotations, while allowing custom controllers, actions, editors, JSP, HTML, and JavaScript. The core is free under LGPL, making it a fit for Java teams that want model-driven development with pro-code extension rather than a purely visual builder. Applications can target web, desktop operating systems, mobile devices, and self-hosted deployments.

Its strongest differentiator is the combination of relational persistence and extensibility. OpenXava supports JPA-based models, editable lists with filtering, paging, charts, reports, and Excel import/export, plus responsive mobile interfaces from the same application code. Hot code reloading can support an iterative development process, while integrations include Spring Boot, Spring Framework, Spring Security, Docker, Oracle, DB2, AS/400, and Informix. Built-in AI chat can query and modify application data. Teams needing custom business logic, JavaScript, or integrations have more room to shape the generated application than they would with a narrowly visual tool.

The paid XavaPro plans add enterprise-oriented capabilities. Professional costs €399 as a one-time license and includes full features, a perpetual license, unlimited applications, users, and servers, for 1 developer. Enterprise costs €599 and adds 1 year of upgrades and full source code; Enterprise for Teams costs €999 and supports 10 developers. Corporate costs €3999 and adds quick private support and priority for bug resolution. XavaPro also provides role-based users, modules, permissions, multitenancy, audit history, single sign-on, and two-factor authentication with Azure AD. Choose OpenXava for Java-led, self-hosted or hybrid business applications; consider an alternative if workflow automation or a broader no-code experience is central.
