Our verdict on OpenTTS

OpenTTS is a self-hosted text-to-speech server for developers and technical teams that want a common interface across multiple open-source speech engines and voices. It supports 27 listed languages, multilingual text, voice selection, HTTP speech generation, and voice and language discovery endpoints. Its web, Linux, API, and self-hosted deployment options suit applications that need local or private speech synthesis rather than a hosted commercial service.

The open-source model keeps the software deployable through Docker, including language-specific images and multi-platform Docker Buildx support. The published feature set includes WAV output and optional WAV caching, while the MIT license covers the OpenTTS software. Bundled voices and engines may carry separate licenses, so commercial deployments should review those terms individually. MaryTTS compatibility also gives teams a defined integration path when existing systems already use that endpoint style.

OpenTTS focuses on infrastructure flexibility rather than advanced voice production. Its SSML support covers voice, language, break, substitution, and say-as features, but the product does not provide verified voice cloning or advanced voice controls. The archived, read-only GitHub repository is also an important consideration for teams that require an actively maintained project. Choose OpenTTS when self-hosting, engine consolidation, Docker deployment, and API access matter most; choose an alternative when broad native platform coverage, richer voice customization, or stronger ongoing project activity is central to the decision.
