OpenTelemetry Collector is open-source, vendor-agnostic software for receiving, processing, routing, and exporting traces, metrics, and logs. It is aimed at engineering and platform teams building observability pipelines across development, production, and multi-backend environments. Small, mid-market, and enterprise teams can deploy it as a self-hosted agent or gateway, with support for Windows, macOS, and Linux environments.

Its main strength is pipeline breadth. Configurable receivers accept telemetry, processors transform it, exporters forward it to observability backends and other destinations, and connectors replicate or route data between pipelines. Enrichment processors add metadata and context, while configurable routing supports multi-destination designs. Teams can install it from binaries, build it from source, run it in Docker, or deploy it with Kubernetes. Custom distributions and components also support organizations that need to shape the Collector around their own pipeline architecture.

The trade-off is operational ownership. OpenTelemetry Collector is software for self-hosted deployment rather than a hosted service, so teams are responsible for its deployment and configuration. Its component-based design provides wide control, but it also means pipeline behavior depends on how receivers, processors, exporters, connectors, and extensions are selected and arranged. Documentation and community support are the listed support channels. Choose it when your team needs an open-source foundation for collecting all major telemetry types and routing them across environments or backends. Choose another option if you want a hosted telemetry pipeline with vendor-managed operation.

    • Offers agent, gateway, and custom distribution patterns
  • Where it doesn't
    • Requires teams to operate a self-hosted deployment
    • Configuration spans receivers, processors, exporters, and connectors
    • Support is provided through documentation and community channels
