Our verdict on OpenStudio

OpenStudio is an open-source, self-hosted broadcast studio for podcast hosts, community radio operators, and independent creators. It runs in a browser and supports multi-host sessions through WebRTC, browser-based mixing, Icecast streaming, and client-side multitrack recording. Participants can be recorded to separate tracks, with per-voice WAV/WebM and program-mix exports available alongside ZIP session downloads. It is a strong fit for teams that want control over their recording environment rather than a hosted service.

Its strongest area is the breadth of audio workflow features in one self-hosted product. Mix-minus monitoring helps participants hear sessions appropriately, while per-participant gain and mute controls support live production. Audio cleaning includes silence detection and loudness normalization, and sessions can be exported in WAV and MP3 formats. Icecast, ffmpeg, whisper.cpp, LM Studio, Ollama, and OpenAI-compatible LLM endpoints provide a practical ecosystem for streaming, media processing, on-device transcription, and show-note generation.

The Self-hosted plan is free to use, MIT licensed, and runs on infrastructure you control. That keeps software costs low, but shifts deployment and operation to the organization running it. The WebRTC mesh design supports sessions of approximately 15 participants, making the product better suited to small productions than larger panel recordings. Choose OpenStudio if self-hosting, separate tracks, local recording, and configurable post-production matter most. A hosted recording service may be a better fit for teams that do not want to operate their own infrastructure.
