OpenSpeedTest is an open-source HTML5 tool for measuring download speed, upload speed, latency, and connection quality. It fits teams that need to publish a network speed test inside a website or application, operate testing on private infrastructure, or measure local, public, home, office, and larger-scale network performance. Browser testing is central, with desktop and mobile network test server applications extending coverage across Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android. The project is also available through a hosted service or self-hosted deployment.

Deployment flexibility is the product’s clearest strength. Self-hosting is available through Docker, source code, or server applications, while HTTP/1.1, HTTP/2, and HTTP/3 support covers current web delivery scenarios. Teams can run continuous stress testing, trigger tests automatically through URL parameters, select among multiple test servers using the lowest-latency option, and optionally store results in an external database. Website and application embedding makes OpenSpeedTest suitable for branded connectivity checks, customer-facing diagnostics, and internal network pages without narrowing the experience to a single device type.

The trade-off is scope. OpenSpeedTest is primarily a speed-test service, so it is a more focused choice than a broad network-testing suite. Its documented capabilities center on active download, upload, latency, connection-quality, and stress testing rather than recurring schedules, distributed-agent controls, or a product API. Choose it when free, open-source speed testing, self-hosting, embedding, and cross-platform access matter most. Consider a broader network-testing product instead when the requirement is scheduled monitoring, larger automation workflows, or a wider set of network diagnostics.
