Our verdict on OpenSim

OpenSim is open-source software for developing musculoskeletal models and creating dynamic movement simulations. It is aimed at biomechanics, rehabilitation, orthopaedics, performance, and movement-science researchers, as well as teams building teaching or research workflows. The package combines a graphical application with C++ libraries, command-line tools, and interfaces for Python, Java, C++, and MATLAB. Teaching examples, tutorials, example models, and documentation support learning and model development.

Its main strength is the depth of its biomechanics feature set. OpenSim includes inverse kinematics and inverse dynamics, static optimization, computed muscle control, and Moco direct-collocation optimal control. Three-dimensional visualization and animation help users inspect models and simulated movement, while plot-data and image export support analysis and communication. The programming interfaces also make it suitable for workflows that extend beyond the graphical application, particularly when researchers need scripting or integration with existing technical environments.

OpenSim is a focused choice rather than a broad physics simulator. Its capabilities center on musculoskeletal structures and movement, so teams looking for general-purpose physical simulation may need a different tool. Delivery is desktop-based across Windows, macOS, and Linux, with API access available through its programming interfaces. The project is free and distributed under the Apache License 2.0, with community and documentation support. Choose OpenSim when detailed musculoskeletal modeling, control, visualization, and export matter most; choose an alternative when the priority is a general physics engine, browser-first delivery, or AI-assisted features.
