Our verdict on OpenSciEd
OpenSciEd is a nonprofit provider of free, open-source science curriculum for elementary, middle, and high school classrooms. It is designed for schools and educators seeking a phenomena-based, student-centered instructional model built around questioning, investigation, modeling, data analysis, and problem-solving. The program includes teacher editions, student handouts, slides, lesson materials, lesson-level guidance, embedded formative and summative assessments, and standards alignment to NGSS. Its editable and modular structure also gives educators room to adapt materials to local instructional needs.
The core curriculum is free, while certified print materials, lab kits, and professional learning may be available through partners. Materials can be downloaded as PDFs or copied into Google Workspace, including Google Classroom, Google Drive, Google Docs, Google Slides, and Google Sheets. Canvas Loader supports importing units into Canvas courses, giving schools a practical path for combining curriculum resources with existing classroom and learning-management workflows. Professional learning and on-demand teacher support add guidance beyond the lesson files themselves.
OpenSciEd’s strongest fit is a school or district that wants a complete science program across K–12 grade bands without adopting a broader, multi-subject platform. Its depth comes from the inquiry model, editable resources, embedded assessments, and support for both digital and downloadable materials. The tradeoff is scope: schools looking for language arts, mathematics, social studies, or an all-in-one curriculum platform will need another solution alongside it. OpenSciEd should suit teams prepared to align implementation around science instruction and adapt modular resources; schools prioritizing a single platform across subjects or depending mainly on certified physical materials may prefer a broader or more packaged alternative.
