OpenSCA is an open-source software composition analysis tool for organizations and developers managing third-party dependencies. It runs on Windows, Linux, and macOS and supports command-line, IDE, cloud, online, and offline usage. Its scope covers open-source dependency detection, direct and transitive dependency analysis, vulnerability analysis, license compliance, and software bill of materials generation. It is suited to teams that need local control over scanning or want to add dependency checks to development and delivery workflows.

The published capabilities make OpenSCA especially useful for offline environments. Scans can use locally configured vulnerability databases, while cloud-based vulnerability intelligence is also available. Reporting is broad, with JSON, HTML, XML, CSV, SQLite, and SBOM outputs. SBOM generation supports DSDX, SPDX, CycloneDX, and SWID formats, giving teams several ways to share component inventories. CI/CD integration covers Jenkins, GitLab CI, and GitHub Actions, and the GitHub Actions integration supports pull-request triggering. Docker is also listed among its integrations.

OpenSCA supports Java/Maven, Java/Gradle, JavaScript/NPM, PHP/Composer, Ruby/gem, Golang/Go mod, Rust/cargo, Erlang/Rebar, and Python/Pip. That breadth is useful across common development stacks, but teams with requirements beyond those ecosystems may need another tool. Its positioning is narrower on advanced application-context analysis: reachability analysis is not presented as a standalone capability. Choose OpenSCA when offline scanning, open-source licensing, SBOM formats, and local deployment matter most. Consider an alternative when broader ecosystem coverage or dedicated reachability analysis is central to the evaluation.

    • CI/CD support for Jenkins, GitLab CI, and GitHub Actions
  • Where it doesn't
    • Supported ecosystems are limited to nine listed package ecosystems
    • Reachability analysis is not presented as a standalone capability
    • Cloud and local workflows may require different vulnerability database setups
