Our verdict on OpenParental

OpenParental is an open-source parental-control system for families that want consent-based supervision and self-hosted deployment. It includes a parent app, a child app and a self-hosted backend, with device pairing based on scoped device tokens. The product focuses on Android child devices and supports remote locking, ping commands, app policies, screen-time limits, usage reporting, location reporting and tamper alerts. Its positioning makes it a fit for technical users, solo operators and small households comfortable managing a self-hosted system.

Its strongest area is device and app oversight. Parents can create per-app blocklists, daily limits and schedules, while screen-time enforcement applies those policies on the child device. OpenParental also detects new app installations and surfaces alerts for disabled accessibility, revoked permissions, force-stop events, offline states and unblock events. Per-app usage reports, periodic location reporting and live screen viewing add visibility beyond basic screen-time controls. Firebase Cloud Messaging is listed as an integration for notifications.

The trade-off is breadth and accessibility. Android is the supported device platform, while the deployment model combines mobile apps with a self-hosted backend. The child app is distributed as a sideloaded APK, which adds an installation step compared with a standard store-based setup. OpenParental does not provide content filtering, so households that prioritize web or content controls should choose another product. It is better suited to technically capable parents who value open-source software, local deployment control and detailed Android supervision than to families seeking broad multi-platform coverage or a simple setup.
