OpenIPAM review
A focused, free IPAM and CMDB for teams managing network infrastructure.

OpenIPAM is an open-source IP address management and configuration management database application for homelabs, small businesses, network engineers, and IT departments. It runs in a browser and can also use a Python Flask backend for multi-user access. Its core scope covers subnets, IP addresses, VLANs, DHCP, hosts, locations, racks, maintenance windows, lifecycle data, audit logs, and data exchange through CSV and JSON. Teams looking for a focused infrastructure inventory tool should find its feature set closely aligned with day-to-day IPAM work.
The strongest fit is for organizations that need structured network records without a paid subscription. OpenIPAM supports subnet and CIDR configuration with gateway, DNS, VLAN, and company assignment; IP reservations, DNS names, and MAC tracking; VLAN management; and DHCP scopes, leases, reservations, and options. Host inventory includes 14 host types and hardware lifecycle tracking, while locations, racks, and maintenance windows add operational context. CSV import/export and JSON backup/restore support data portability, and audit logging records IP assignment history.
OpenIPAM is narrower than a full service-management or dependency-mapping platform. Its documented emphasis is network infrastructure inventory, so teams that need service mapping, dependency mapping, or discovery imports should consider a product built around those workflows instead. Deployment can remain browser-based or use the Flask backend for multi-user access, with Microsoft Entra ID SAML single sign-on in server mode. Choose OpenIPAM for detailed, free, open-source IPAM and CMDB records; choose an alternative when broader application relationships or automated discovery are central requirements.
