OpenFunction review
A Kubernetes-native FaaS for teams that want self-hosted event-driven workloads.

OpenFunction is an open-source Function-as-a-Service platform for teams deploying event-driven serverless workloads on Kubernetes. It supports synchronous and asynchronous functions, event sources, trigger conditions, autoscaling from zero to N replicas, and function development in Go, Node.js, Python, Java, .NET, and WasmEdge. The platform is aimed at organizations that want control over the underlying runtime rather than a managed serverless service.
Its strongest fit is a Kubernetes-centered platform stack. OpenFunction can generate OCI-compliant container images and build them with Shipwright and Cloud Native Buildpacks. Kubernetes Gateway API-based ingress and traffic management cover how workloads enter and move through the platform, while integrations with Knative and KEDA extend its serverless and autoscaling foundation. Dapr provides a BaaS integration path, and WasmEdge adds an alternative workload runtime alongside OCI containers. These pieces make OpenFunction relevant when infrastructure teams already operate Kubernetes and want serverless capabilities within that environment.
The trade-off is operational ownership. OpenFunction is self-hosted, so teams must provide and manage the Kubernetes environment and its connected components instead of selecting a hosted plan. That model suits organizations prioritizing runtime control, open-source deployment, and integration with existing cloud-native tooling. It is less suitable for buyers looking for a fully managed function service or a narrow, standalone deployment experience. Choose OpenFunction when Kubernetes compatibility, event-driven execution, and configurable runtimes matter most; consider another platform when minimizing infrastructure responsibility is the primary goal.
OpenFunction pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Supports synchronous and asynchronous functions with event triggers
- Scales workloads from zero to N replicas on Kubernetes
- Combines OCI images, Gateway API, Dapr, and WasmEdge support
- Where it doesn't
- Requires teams to operate the serverless platform themselves
- Its primary deployment model is limited to self-hosted Kubernetes
- Workflow durability and execution-time controls are not established here
