OpenAssetTools review
A Windows and Linux toolkit for building, extracting, and managing Call of Duty assets.

OpenAssetTools is a standalone, open-source modding toolset for PC versions of five older Call of Duty titles: Modern Warfare, Modern Warfare 2, Modern Warfare 3, Black Ops, and Black Ops II. It is aimed at modders who need to inspect supported fastfiles, extract asset data, create custom fastfiles, and package related content. Windows and Linux are supported, and the project is licensed under GPLv3. Its focus is technical asset handling rather than a general-purpose mod manager.
The toolkit covers several parts of the modding workflow. Unlinker loads supported fastfiles (.ff) and dumps supported assets to disk, while Linker builds custom fastfiles from assets and .zone project definitions with preprocessing support. OpenAssetTools can also load and reuse existing zones and assets, extract images from IWD files through search paths, and build IPak files together with fastfiles. CLI operation for Linker and Unlinker suits workflows that favor project files and repeatable command-line tasks.
Its main limitation is uneven scope across the supported games. Documentation describes feature coverage as varying by game, and the project remains incomplete, so it is better suited to users who can work within those boundaries than to anyone seeking a finished, uniform toolchain. Choose OpenAssetTools if your priority is open-source Windows or Linux tooling for Call of Duty fastfiles, IWD extraction, IPak packaging, and zone-based builds. Consider another option if you need consistent coverage across every listed title or a more complete modding environment.
