Open Android Backup is an open-source script and Flutter companion app for locally backing up and restoring Android devices. It is aimed at Android users who want to keep backup files on their own computer rather than use a hosted backup service. The software runs across Linux, macOS, Windows, and Android, and can cover internal storage, contacts, installed applications, SMS messages, and call logs. Its file-based backup scope makes it more focused than a broader computer or server backup product.

The backup workflow combines ADB with a companion app and supports wireless backups after initial setup. Archives are encrypted and compressed with 7-Zip, with configurable compression settings and formats readable through 7-Zip. User-defined backup and restore hooks, environment-variable controls, and optional secure erasure of temporary unencrypted files add useful flexibility for scripted or unattended operation. The Flutter-based companion app also provides access to additional device data. These capabilities make the product a practical fit for users comfortable with local scripts, Android tooling, and configurable workflows.

Restoration is more limited for some data types. SMS messages and call logs are view-only, while app data is not saved because of Android restrictions, so the product should not be treated as a complete application-state migration tool. It also focuses on local Android-device backup rather than computer or server backup, and does not provide cloud integrations. Choose Open Android Backup if open-source software, local storage, encryption, and automation matter most. Choose an alternative if you need cloud-connected protection, broader device coverage, or full restoration of app data, SMS, and call logs.
