ONOS is an open-source software-defined networking platform for controlling, configuring, monitoring, and validating network infrastructure. It is aimed at network operators, service providers, and teams building programmable networks or specialized networking applications. The platform provides network-device configuration, topology management, forwarding-plane programming, APIs, command-line access, graphical interfaces, and Kubernetes-based deployment. Its current µONOS architecture is modular and microservice-based, while the project also distinguishes it from ONOS-Classic.

For teams working across programmable network protocols, ONOS covers a focused set of capabilities. It supports P4Runtime, gNMI/OpenConfig, gNOI, gRPC, Kubernetes, and Helm, alongside OpenFlow support in its platform specifications. The feature set spans device maintenance, topology validation, P4 forwarding-plane programming, gNMI northbound and southbound services, and topology management. This makes it a strong fit for environments where protocol-level control and custom network applications matter more than a broad, general-purpose automation suite.

Operational controls add useful depth for teams managing ongoing network changes. ONOS includes a configuration graphical interface with change history and rollback, CLI access, and automated cluster and network testing tools. Kubernetes and Helm deployment align the platform with containerized, self-hosted infrastructure, but that model also places deployment and platform-management responsibility on the adopting team. Choose ONOS for open-source, programmable network control with testing and configuration-history features. Choose an alternative when the priority is a less specialized workflow-oriented automation product or a simpler deployment model.

ONOS pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Supports device configuration, topology validation, and configuration rollback
    • Programs forwarding planes with P4 and supports gNMI services
    • Provides Kubernetes, Helm, and automated network testing tools
  • Where it doesn't
    • Its protocol-focused scope may not suit broad network automation needs
    • Self-hosted deployment requires teams to manage the platform environment
    • The architecture is specialized for programmable networking applications
