OMNeT++ is an open-source, modular C++ simulation library and framework for building network simulators. Its discrete-event model supports wired and wireless networks, on-chip networks, queueing networks and other distributed systems. Academic and nonprofit users can work under the Academic Public License, while commercial use requires a commercial license. With Windows, macOS and Linux support, OMNeT++ fits universities, research groups and engineering teams that need a flexible foundation rather than a single-purpose modeling application.

The framework’s depth is its main strength. NED provides hierarchical network definitions, while C++ supports simulation module development. The Eclipse-based Simulation IDE brings modeling and analysis into a desktop environment, and users can also run simulations graphically or from the command line. Parallel distributed simulation extends the framework for larger or distributed workloads. Result analysis and visualization are included, alongside real-time simulation and network emulation extensions, including hardware-in-the-loop support. Python APIs and chart scripting add an automation path for analysis workflows.

Pricing and licensing deserve attention before adoption. Academic and nonprofit use has a defined licensing route, but commercial licensing is handled through the related OMNEST product and requires direct commercial licensing. That makes OMNeT++ a strong fit for mature academic and engineering simulation programs with the technical capacity to work in NED and C++, especially when broad modeling, distributed execution or real-time extensions matter. Teams seeking a simpler, narrowly focused simulator or a publicly posted commercial price may prefer a different option.

OMNeT++ pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • NED and C++ support hierarchical, modular network modeling
    • Desktop IDE plus graphical and command-line execution
    • Distributed, real-time, emulation and Python automation support
  • Where it doesn't
    • Commercial use requires a commercial license
    • Commercial licensing is handled through OMNEST
    • The framework is more technical than narrow-purpose simulation tools
