ntopng review
A self-hosted choice for packet capture, flow collection, and Layer 7 traffic analysis.

ntopng is a self-hosted, web-based network monitoring application for network administrators, security teams, and service providers. It combines passive packet capture with NetFlow, sFlow, and IPFIX collection, then analyzes application protocols, traffic behavior, performance metrics, and cybersecurity indicators. Community is open source and includes real-time visibility, top talkers, Layer 7 application detection, alerts and notifications, active monitoring, and network discovery. The product fits teams that need detailed traffic understanding rather than only availability checks or broad infrastructure dashboards.
Its strongest area is traffic analysis. ntopng can provide real-time and historical views, behavioral checks, network and topology discovery, and active checks covering ICMP, HTTP/HTTPS, throughput, and Speedtest. SNMP infrastructure monitoring broadens its reach beyond packet data, while integrations with nProbe, nProbe Cento, Suricata, syslog, ClickHouse, Elasticsearch, LDAP, and external notification endpoints support different monitoring environments. The RESTful API also gives teams a way to connect its data and controls with other systems. These capabilities make it a good fit for investigating application behavior, traffic patterns, and network relationships.
The plan structure determines how far the product extends beyond core visibility. Pro adds LDAP authentication, extended behavioral checks and alerts, and network matrix timeseries. Enterprise M/L/XL/XXL adds historical data and reports, extended SNMP support, NetFlow/sFlow exporter statistics, and infrastructure monitoring. The trade-off is a self-hosted operating model and a product focus that remains more specialized than a full infrastructure suite. Choose ntopng when packet-level visibility and flow analysis are central; choose an alternative when you need a broader, less specialized platform or prefer a hosted deployment.
