Our verdict on Notebrew

Notebrew is an open-source static site generator and content management system for creating websites and blogs. It suits developers and small teams that want control over deployment, HTML templates, themes, assets, and domains rather than a managed publishing service. It runs as a desktop program on Windows, macOS, and Linux, or as a self-hosted web server. The platform is also distributed as a single-binary self-hosted application, giving technically minded users several deployment options.

Its strongest fit is a focused publishing workflow built around static output. Notebrew includes blog post and post-list templates, HTML template editing, reusable internal and external templates, theme import and export, theme publishing and application, and asset management for CSS, JavaScript, images, and fonts. Custom domain configuration and automatic HTTPS support extend the self-hosted setup. Database-backed file storage and full-text search options add useful content-management depth, but theme editing is based on custom code. That makes Notebrew more suitable for developers than for teams seeking a visual, no-code site builder.

Notebrew follows an open-source pricing model, with no paid tiers to compare. Its ecosystem is intentionally narrow: the listed platforms cover desktop, web, and self-hosted use, while support channels are documentation and community. Scheduling, analytics, and integrations are outside its listed feature set, so publishers needing those capabilities should consider a platform designed around them. Choose Notebrew when static generation, source-level customization, and deployment control are priorities. Choose an alternative when you want managed hosting, built-in growth analytics, connected services, or a less technical editing experience.
