Nornir review
A flexible open-source framework for Python-led network automation.

Nornir is a pure-Python automation framework for network and infrastructure engineers who want to build automation around code. It manages device inventories, filters hosts by device or group, dispatches tasks, and supports serial and threaded runners. Its self-hosted deployment model suits teams that want control over their automation environment, while Python developers can shape workflows around the framework rather than adopting a fixed hosted interface. Supported platforms include Cisco IOS, Cisco NX-OS, Arista EOS, Junos and Palo Alto PAN-OS.
Nornir’s strongest area is its extensible execution model. Plugins cover inventory, connections, runners and processors, and network plugins support facts and interface retrieval, configuration loading and validation. Dry-run execution provides a way to review intended changes before applying them. Community integrations connect Nornir with libraries and systems such as Netmiko, Scrapli, NAPALM and NetBox, giving teams options for device communication, network abstraction and inventory workflows. This makes the product a useful foundation for custom runbooks and task-based automation rather than a narrow command runner.
The trade-off is that Nornir is a framework, not a hosted SaaS product or a complete network operations platform. Teams must handle the Python environment, inventory approach, plugin choices and operating model themselves. Its open-source model avoids paid plan selection, but it also means the experience depends on how much the team builds around the framework. Choose Nornir when Python flexibility, extensibility, configuration validation and dry-run execution are priorities. Consider a broader platform when you need a more packaged operating experience, wider platform coverage or a hosted service.
Nornir pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Python framework with inventory filtering and task dispatch
- Parallel serial and threaded runners for network tasks
- Plugins support facts, validation, connections and processors
- Where it doesn't
- Self-hosted setup requires Python and infrastructure management
- Framework scope leaves broader platform coverage limited
- No paid tiers or hosted SaaS operating model
