Nordstjernen is an independent web browser written from scratch in C, using a clean-room rendering engine rather than Gecko, WebKit, or Blink. It is designed for users who want free, lightweight browsing with a focus on process isolation, sandboxing, privacy features, and core HTML, CSS, and JavaScript support. Official builds cover Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, FreeBSD, NetBSD, the JVM, and an API surface.

Its security-focused design is the clearest reason to consider it. Each tab uses a sandboxed renderer process, while Linux adds seccomp and Landlock sandboxing. A local safe-browsing blocklist, partitioned cookies, and private-browsing mode provide additional privacy and safety controls. JavaScript runs through QuickJS, and the browser also supports WebAssembly through WAMR and WebGL 1 and 2. Everyday tools include tabs, bookmarks, find-in-page, page-style printing, and save-to-PDF. These capabilities give Nordstjernen useful breadth without shifting its focus away from browsing fundamentals.

The trade-off is a narrower ecosystem. Extension support is listed as none, and cross-device synchronization is not part of the published feature set. The browser also does not provide AI features. Its source-available NSL-1.0 licensing excludes competing uses, so it is not classified as open source. Nordstjernen suits users who prioritize isolation, privacy-oriented browser features, and broad device coverage over add-ons and account-based continuity. Users who depend on extensions or synchronized browser data should choose a browser built around those capabilities instead.
