NodeChef Docker Cloud hosts Dockerized web and mobile applications on managed bare-metal infrastructure or on servers from another cloud provider. It suits teams that want to deploy containerized apps alongside databases, with scaling and operational tools in one platform. Deployments can come from GitHub, GitLab, or Bitbucket, the NodeChef CLI, or a project archive uploaded through the dashboard. The platform builds images from Dockerfiles and provides a web-based interface.

Its scaling and deployment controls are a notable fit for workloads that need more than a basic container host. Teams can define automatic scaling rules using CPU, RAM, latency, or connected-client metrics, and use load balancing and zero-downtime deployments. Monitoring includes real-time metrics, streaming logs, and threshold alerts. Automatic TLS certificates and custom certificate uploads are available. Integrated database options include MongoDB, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and Redis. However, NodeChef’s Docker documentation says persistent volumes are not supported, which may rule it out for applications that require persistent storage.

Pricing needs to be read by deployment type. According to the vendor’s pricing page, a Bare Metal App and Database Containers configuration is shown at $9 per month and $0.01 per hour, with hourly billing; it includes app and database containers, load balancing, automatic scaling, monitoring, and deployments. The $9 figure is a configuration example rather than a fixed all-inclusive subscription. The Private-server runtime fee is $10 per GB RAM per month, while underlying server and bandwidth costs are separate. The 14-day trial applies to deployments on customers’ own servers. Choose NodeChef if its scaling controls and database options fit your deployment, but consider another host if persistent volumes are essential.

NodeChef Docker Cloud pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Builds container images from Dockerfiles and deploys from Git providers or CLI
    • Scales by CPU, RAM, latency, or connected-client metrics
    • Includes load balancing, TLS, monitoring, logs, and managed databases
  • Where it doesn't
    • Does not support persistent volumes
    • The $9/month configuration is billed hourly, not as a fixed subscription
    • Private-server hosting adds a RAM-based fee, with server and bandwidth costs separate
