node-git-hooks review
An open-source Node package for copying versioned commit hooks across platforms.

node-git-hooks is an open-source Node.js package that installs repository Git hooks by copying files from a .githooks directory into .git/hooks. It targets solo developers and small teams maintaining Node repositories, including projects that need the same hook files across Windows, macOS and Linux. The package is installed as an npm development dependency and can be invoked from a package.json prepare script, making it suited to repositories that already manage development tooling through npm.
Its integration model is focused and explicit. The published configuration supports a custom repository path when package.json sits outside the repository root, plus a custom githooks directory path for projects with a different layout. Recursive directory and symlink copying extends the file-transfer behavior beyond a single flat folder. Installation also skips directories without a .git directory, which fits workflows that run package installation in locations that are not Git repositories. Custom repository paths and the stated monorepo support make it applicable to multi-project repositories without changing the basic copy model.
The main trade-off is scope. node-git-hooks manages the commit stage, so teams seeking broader lifecycle coverage will need another approach. Its value is greatest when the requirement is copying a versioned set of hook files through an npm-centered project setup rather than coordinating a larger hook framework. Choose it for small Node repositories that want cross-platform installation, prepare-script integration and configurable paths; choose an alternative when your workflow depends on multiple hook stages or more extensive management features.
node-git-hooks pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Copies versioned hooks recursively from .githooks into .git/hooks
- Runs across Windows, macOS and Linux through Node.js filesystem operations
- Supports prepare scripts, custom paths and multi-project repositories
- Where it doesn't
- Supports only the commit hook stage
- Requires npm and package.json integration for the standard workflow
- Feature depth is modest compared with broader hook-management tools
