Nimble is the default package manager for the Nim programming language, aimed at developers creating, managing, and publishing Nim packages. It searches and lists packages, installs dependencies, resolves dependency versions, and supports library, binary, and hybrid package formats. Nimble is bundled with Nim and can also be installed separately, making it a central option for Nim projects across Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Dependency management is Nimble’s strongest area. It can obtain packages from local directories, Git, Mercurial, and cached package metadata, while its lockfiles pin exact dependency versions and revisions. Development-mode dependency linking supports work on local packages without treating every iteration as a published dependency. Nimble can also automatically manage project Nim versions, which gives projects a defined way to align their tooling with development requirements. These capabilities make it a practical fit for projects that need repeatable dependency resolution and a clear path from local development to package publication.

Nimble also covers the package lifecycle beyond installation. Developers can create packages, publish them to the official package list, and work with Git, Mercurial, and GitHub integrations. Its focus is deliberately narrow: teams building Nim software should find the feature set aligned with their language ecosystem, while teams seeking a general-purpose package manager should choose a different category fit. Nimble does not include AI features, and the version bundled with a Nim release may differ from the latest commit described in its documentation. Choose Nimble for native Nim package workflows, dependency pinning, and publishing; look elsewhere for broader language coverage or AI-assisted package management.
