Nextcloud News is an open-source RSS and Atom feed reader that runs inside Nextcloud. It suits individuals and teams already operating a Nextcloud server who want feed subscriptions, organized reading, and synchronized states across connected clients. The application supports web access, Android, a REST API, and self-hosted deployment, making it a fit for users who prefer control over where their feed data runs.

Its strongest advantage is the combination of feed management and synchronization. Automatic background updates keep subscriptions current, while folders help organize larger reading lists. Full-text article retrieval can bring complete articles into the reading workflow, and per-feed keyword filters provide a way to narrow incoming content. OPML import and export support makes subscription migration practical. Read, unread, starred, and folder states synchronize through the News server, with the REST API connecting clients and other workflows. Offline reading is also listed among its capabilities.

The main trade-off is architectural rather than feature-based: Nextcloud News is a server application, not a standalone hosted SaaS product. Setup therefore belongs with users who already have Nextcloud or are comfortable maintaining a self-hosted environment. Mobile, desktop, and terminal-based workflows can connect through the API, but the published client arrangement is mixed: the Android client is identified as official, while other clients are maintained by the community or separately from the News team. Choose Nextcloud News for open-source, self-hosted synchronization and a focused RSS workflow; choose another reader if you want a fully hosted service without Nextcloud administration.

Nextcloud News pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Automatic background updates with folders and full-text article retrieval
    • Keyword filters, OPML import and export, and synchronized read states
    • Open-source web, Android, API, and self-hosted coverage
  • Where it doesn't
    • Requires a Nextcloud server rather than a standalone hosted service
    • Client maintenance varies, with only the Android client identified as official
    • Designed around Nextcloud rather than broad hosted-reader compatibility
