Our verdict on Neurosift

Neurosift is a browser-based tool for visualizing neuroscience data, especially Neurodata Without Borders (NWB) files. It is aimed at researchers exploring neurophysiology data and research archives, with interactive views for spike trains, raster plots, local field potential and other time series, and position tracking. The project is available without charge, making it a fit for individual researchers and small groups whose work centers on these datasets rather than broader business dashboards.

Its archive connections are central to the product: users can browse the DANDI Archive and explore EMBER Archive and OpenNeuro alongside NWB files. Visualizations can be shared with collaborators, which supports research discussions around specific datasets. For work outside the browser, the neurosift Python package enables local operation on NWB files. This combination favors researchers working across those named archives or needing both browser exploration and local file analysis; it is not positioned as a general visualization layer for unrelated data sources.

Neurosift also includes an experimental conversational search feature for DANDI and OpenNeuro. Because that capability is explicitly experimental, it is better treated as an additional way to explore those archives than as a primary workflow dependency. The project is open source under the Apache-2.0 license and offers community support. Researchers whose visualization needs are concentrated in NWB and supported neuroscience archives should consider it; teams seeking broad data-source coverage or formal support should look for a wider-purpose alternative.
