NetXMS is an open-source network and infrastructure monitoring platform for enterprises, telecoms, internet service providers, managed service providers, banks, industrial operators, and other organizations. It covers network devices, servers, applications, services, and industrial equipment through SNMP, MQTT, Modbus/TCP, EtherNet/IP, OPC UA, HTTP/REST, and agents. Automatic discovery, topology maps, service checks, traffic metrics, event processing, dashboards, reports, and notification actions make it suited to environments that need more than basic device availability checks. Deployment options include on premises and cloud, with web, Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, API, and self-hosted support.

Its main strength is breadth across monitoring methods and network structures. NetXMS supports Layer 2, IP, OSPF, hybrid, and internal communication topology maps, alongside proxy agents, zones, and distributed monitoring. It also checks HTTP, HTTPS, SSH, POP3, SMTP, FTP, Telnet, and TCP services; collects interface traffic and performance data; and offers Java, web, REST, and scripting APIs. Grafana, Oxidized, Nagios plugins, webhooks, Telegram, and Microsoft Teams extend its ecosystem fit. Organizations with industrial equipment, distributed sites, or mixed infrastructure should find this coverage relevant.

NetXMS itself is free and open source, while commercial support is available separately. Basic support includes a two-business-day guaranteed response, 10 support cases per year, online chat and email support, and precompiled binaries. Standard support costs €580 per month and adds unlimited cases, business-hours telephone support, and coverage for stable versions released within the last 12 months. Premium support adds a four-business-hour response, unlimited cases, remote assistance, and 24-month version coverage. Enterprise Edition includes Standard support with a customized offer. Teams should choose NetXMS for broad, open-source monitoring; smaller networks seeking a simpler, narrowly focused tool may prefer an alternative.

NetXMS pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Automatic discovery with Layer 2, IP, OSPF, hybrid, and internal topology maps
    • Monitors networks, servers, services, applications, and industrial equipment
    • Distributed monitoring with dashboards, APIs, Grafana, and multiple alert channels
  • Where it doesn't
    • Windows deployments are limited to 250 nodes without a valid license
    • Commercial support pricing is not consistent across every published tier
    • The broad feature set may be more than smaller networks require
