NetSim by Tetcos is a Windows-based packet-level, discrete-event network simulator and emulator for research, teaching, commercial industry, and defence work. It is suited to teams studying wired and wireless communication networks, protocols, applications, and emerging network technologies. Its model coverage includes 5G/6G, satellite, non-terrestrial networks, MANETs, Wi-Fi, IoT, VANETs, SDN, and military radio. A free NetSim Lite edition is available for individual use, while paid editions serve broader academic and professional requirements.

The standout capability is the combination of simulation and live integration. NetSim supports real-time network emulation synchronized with wall-clock time, plus hardware-in-the-loop and live-application integration. That makes it relevant when a study needs to connect simulated networks with real applications or hardware rather than remain entirely inside a virtual model. Packet traces, event traces, metrics, plots, and results dashboards support analysis after repeated runs, while CLI batch automation is suited to structured simulation workflows. Python and MATLAB runtime interfaces add programmatic control, and integrations include SUMO and Wireshark.

Pricing is organized around editions, with NetSim Lite described as free for individual use and Academic and Standard pricing provided through contact with Tetcos. The Academic edition has a documented 100-node limit, while node limits vary by edition. Protocol source code in C is available for supported editions, but NetSim is not open source. The Windows desktop focus and contact-sales purchasing model may not suit teams seeking a cross-platform or fully self-service tool. Choose NetSim for research-grade protocol, wireless, emulation, and hardware-linked work; choose an alternative if those capabilities are unnecessary or platform flexibility is the priority.
