NetMagis is a self-hosted network information system for administrators managing IP addresses, DNS, DHCP and network inventory. It supports both IPv4 and IPv6 address management, DNS data generation with BIND zone files, static and dynamic DHCP allocations, delegated DNS administration, and fine-grained permissions for addresses and domains. Its scope suits teams that want these functions represented in one open-source system rather than handled through separate tools. NetMagis has been developed since 2002 and is provided by the University of Strasbourg.

Its ecosystem fit is strongest in environments built around LDAP, BIND and supported network hardware. Account management can use LDAP or the application's own database, while VLAN assignment supports Cisco, HP and Juniper equipment. Network administrators can also work with automatically generated topology maps, traffic graph access, and host lookup by IP address, MAC address or equipment port. The published capabilities cover subnet planning, DNS data management, DHCP management, IPv6 support and audit history, giving the product a broad network-operations footprint.

The main trade-off is deployment responsibility: NetMagis is self-hosted and available for web and Linux environments, so it suits organizations prepared to operate their own network administration software. Its open-source model and CeCILL-B license make it a fit for teams evaluating source-available infrastructure software, while its feature set stays centered on IPAM, DNS, DHCP and connected network records. Choose NetMagis when mature network inventory and administration are the priority; consider another product when you need a broader IT management scope, a different deployment model, or AI features.

NetMagis pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Manages IPv4 and IPv6 addresses with DNS and DHCP support
    • Combines permissions, LDAP, VLANs, topology maps and traffic graphs
    • Supports BIND plus Cisco, HP and Juniper network equipment
  • Where it doesn't
    • Requires a self-hosted deployment
    • Focused on network administration rather than broad IT management
    • Does not include AI features
