NetBox is a network and infrastructure management platform for network engineers and operators who need a centralized source of truth. It models IP addresses, devices, virtual machines, sites, racks, cabling, VLANs, VRFs, VPN tunnels, circuits, and wireless infrastructure. The open-source Community edition supports self-managed deployment, while hosted Cloud plans provide progressively broader operational and support capabilities. NetBox is a strong fit for documenting complex environments and organizing IPAM across network and infrastructure teams.

Its feature depth extends beyond inventory. NetBox supports scheduled network and device discovery through NetBox Discovery, configuration rendering with device and VM configuration contexts, REST and read-only GraphQL APIs, webhooks, event rules, custom scripts, reports, change logging, audit trails, permissions, and a plugin framework. Integrations include ServiceNow, Splunk, Ansible, Itential, Gluware, and VMware. Cloud Starter adds a single-tenant application, automatic version upgrades, email support, and certified plugins. Cloud Professional adds production and development/staging environments, SSO group mapping, and on-demand major and minor upgrades. Cloud Premium adds advanced deployment options, enterprise SAML or custom SSO, and 24×7 customer support with response-time SLAs.

The main boundary is operational scope: core NetBox is not configuration-management software. Teams that need a complete system for managing network-device configurations should pair it with suitable automation tooling or consider an alternative centered on configuration management. The Community plan also places deployment and ongoing administration with the organization. Cloud plans reduce that burden, but pricing is handled through Contact Sales. Choose NetBox when accurate infrastructure modeling, IPAM, discovery, extensibility, and auditable change history matter most; choose another primary platform when device configuration management is the central requirement.

    • Open APIs, discovery, audit trails, plugins, and integrations
  • Where it doesn't
    • Core NetBox is not configuration-management software
    • Community deployment is self-managed
    • Cloud plans use Contact Sales pricing
