NetApp SnapLock is a license-based ONTAP feature for retaining files and snapshots in nonrewritable, nonerasable WORM storage. It is aimed at organizations with regulatory or corporate retention requirements, especially those already operating NetApp storage systems or ONTAP Select. Access is supported through NFS and CIFS/SMB, while supported content includes files, ONTAP snapshots, surveillance recordings, emergency phone records, and WORM log files. Deployment is on premises, with API and self-hosted platform support.

Retention controls are the central strength. Compliance and Enterprise WORM modes support minimum, maximum, default, and indefinite retention periods. Legal holds address litigation requirements, and event-based policies can link retention to defined events. SnapLock also protects snapshots and supports SnapMirror replication of WORM data. Audit logging and SnapLock APIs add operational controls, while cross-volume deduplication contributes to storage efficiency. These capabilities make it a focused fit for teams that need immutable retention within an ONTAP environment rather than a broad, storage-agnostic archive system.

The main trade-off is architectural scope. SnapLock runs as part of NetApp storage systems and ONTAP Select, so organizations without that foundation would need a different approach. Its pricing model is contact sales, and the feature is license-based. Choose SnapLock when compliant WORM storage, retention policies, legal holds, and NetApp replication are priorities. Consider an alternative when the requirement is a standalone software archive, broader platform coverage, or a clearly defined search and restore experience.

    • Replicates WORM data through SnapMirror with audit logging
  • Where it doesn't
    • Requires a NetApp ONTAP storage environment
    • Is not a standalone software-only archive product
    • Search and restore workflows are not a stated focus
