Nautobot is an open-source network source of truth and automation platform from Network to Code. It is designed for enterprises operating complex networks and models devices, interfaces, IP addresses, VLANs, circuits, cables, and other network data. The platform runs through web, Linux, API, and self-hosted deployments, with hybrid deployment support. Its free open-source model provides a substantial foundation, while Professional, Enterprise, and Cloud editions are also offered for organizations seeking commercial options.

The strongest fit is its combination of validated network data and workflow automation. Python-based Jobs support scheduling, permissions, logging, and approvals, while REST and GraphQL APIs provide programmatic access. Dynamic configuration generation uses validated data, and webhooks support event-driven automation. Custom Apps and extensible data models allow teams to shape the platform around their operating practices. Compliance and configuration-drift validation, plus multi-vendor OS upgrades, extend Nautobot beyond inventory management into ongoing network operations.

Nautobot also fits well into an established infrastructure ecosystem. Integrations include Ansible, Terraform, Batfish, Itential, IP Fabric, Cisco ACI, Arista CloudVision, Cisco DNA Center, Infoblox, ServiceNow, vSphere, and Bootstrap. Its supported platforms span vendors and systems including Arista EOS, Cisco IOS and NX-OS, Juniper Junos, Fortinet FortiOS, Palo Alto PAN-OS, Nokia SR OS, Linux, MikroTik RouterOS, F5 BIG-IP, and Citrix NetScaler. Choose Nautobot when network automation depends on structured data, approvals, compliance, and extensibility. Teams needing only a small, focused automation utility may find its breadth unnecessary.

    • Python Jobs include scheduling, permissions, logging, and approvals
    • Connects with Ansible, Terraform, Batfish, ServiceNow, and major network platforms
  • Where it doesn't
    • Open-source deployment puts administration on the operating team
    • Its broad scope may exceed the needs of simple automation projects
    • Commercial editions and Cloud are separate from the free open-source model
