Nala review
A richer APT workflow for Debian-based systems, with history, mirrors, and parallel downloads.

Nala is an open-source Linux command-line frontend for libapt-pkg and APT. It is designed for people who manage Debian, Ubuntu, and related distributions from a terminal and want more structured package discovery and transaction control. Its commands cover listing, searching, showing, and checking package policy, alongside installation, removal, autoremove, updates, and upgrades. Nala works with .deb packages and supports dependency resolution within the Debian package ecosystem.
Its strongest distinction is the breadth of its transaction workflow. Users can choose normal, safe, or full upgrade modes, view transaction summaries, and inspect history after changes have been made. Undo and redo operations add a way to revisit package transactions, while local .deb installation and direct URL ingestion extend the workflow beyond repository packages. Machine-readable output and shell completions also support terminal-based workflows that benefit from clearer command output and repeatable interaction.
Nala also focuses on download and repository handling. Parallel package downloads can be configured with per-domain connection limits, the nala fetch command supports mirror selection, and downloaded packages receive hash verification. These features make it a useful choice for Debian-based users who want more control around retrieval and package changes without leaving the APT ecosystem. It is less suitable for teams seeking cross-distribution package management, verified lockfiles, workspaces, or private registries. The project is transitioning from its original Python implementation to Rust, with the active application code under src.
Nala pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Adds discovery, policy, and multiple upgrade modes to APT workflows
- Supports parallel downloads, mirror selection, and package hash verification
- Provides transaction history with inspection, undo, and redo operations
- Where it doesn't
- Supports Debian, Ubuntu, and derivatives rather than multiple package ecosystems
- Works with .deb packages and does not provide verified lockfile support
- Does not provide workspace or private-registry support
