Music Player Daemon review
A capable self-hosted music daemon for network playback, remote control and high-resolution audio.

Music Player Daemon (MPD) is free, open-source server software for playing stored audio files and streams. It is aimed at people who want self-hosted network music playback, including Linux-based music servers, Windows installations, Android builds and embedded audio hardware. MPD maintains a searchable music database, queues and stored playlists, while clients control playback through its network protocol. Supported audio formats include WAV, AIFF, AAC, FLAC, DSDIFF, DSF, MP3 and FFmpeg-supported codecs.
Its strongest fit is for organized, remote-controlled audio libraries rather than traditional desktop media playback. Plugin-based decoders, audio outputs, storage sources and streaming expand how the server can handle music. MPD can play files from SMB/CIFS and NFS network storage, provide HTTP audio streaming output, and support bit-perfect playback. High-resolution workflows are covered through native, DoP and PCM-converted DSD playback. These capabilities make it practical for networked listening setups where the playback service and user interface are separate components.
The main trade-off is architectural: MPD is a server or daemon, not a complete graphical application. Separate command-line, graphical or web clients are installed independently, so it suits users comfortable assembling a client-server music setup better than those seeking an all-in-one player. The project’s Android port is described as not yet sufficiently usable in the MPD 0.24 release notes. MPD should be picked for self-hosted audio libraries, network control and detailed playback options; users seeking integrated video, subtitle playback or a conventional single-application interface should choose an alternative.
Music Player Daemon pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Server-side playback with remote control over a network protocol
- Searchable database, queues and stored playlist management
- Bit-perfect and DSD playback with network storage support
- Where it doesn't
- Primarily a server daemon rather than a conventional graphical player
- Separate command-line, graphical or web clients are required
- Video and subtitle playback are not supported features
