Munin is an open-source, self-hosted infrastructure monitoring tool for servers, networks, SANs, applications, and other measurable resources. It is aimed at teams that want basic Linux metric collection, RRD-based storage, web graphs, threshold checks, and alert notifications under their own control. Its master/node architecture places a central master alongside nodes on monitored hosts, while agentless monitoring is available for special cases. The project dates to 2002 and includes a library of monitoring plugins for extending coverage.

Deployment and ecosystem fit are central to Munin’s design. A master collects metrics from monitored hosts, stores them in RRD files, and presents the results through web-based graphs and HTML pages. SNMP supports remote-device monitoring, while SSH enables asynchronous data retrieval. Automatic plugin configuration reduces some setup work, and custom plugins can be written in any language. RRD sizing is configurable, including a documented 400-day option at five-minute resolution, which gives administrators control over retention behavior.

Munin is a practical choice for Linux-focused teams that value open-source software, self-hosting, straightforward graphs, and threshold-based alerts. It is less suitable for organizations seeking a vendor-hosted service or a broader monitoring feature set beyond its established collection, storage, graphing, and plugin model. Choose it when control, extensibility, SNMP, and SSH retrieval matter more than a wide platform ecosystem; consider an alternative when the monitoring scope requires capabilities outside that focused design.

Munin pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Master/node architecture supports centralized metric collection
    • RRD storage provides configurable metric retention and web graphs
    • SNMP, SSH, and custom plugins extend monitoring coverage
  • Where it doesn't
    • Self-hosted deployment requires managing the monitoring environment
    • Feature breadth is narrower than broader monitoring platforms
    • No vendor-hosted deployment option is provided
