Our verdict on MuJoCo
MuJoCo is a free, open-source physics engine for research and development in robotics, biomechanics, graphics, animation, and machine learning. It is aimed at researchers and developers building local simulation and control applications, especially those working with articulated structures and contact-rich environments. Its capabilities also support model-based optimization, control synthesis, state estimation, system identification, and mechanism design, so it suits technical workflows rather than buyers seeking a hosted, ready-made business application.
The engine's breadth within dynamics is a defining strength. It handles generalized-coordinate dynamics and inverse dynamics with contacts, alongside soft contacts, limits, friction, equality constraints, and particle, cloth, rope, and soft-object simulation. Actuators include motors, cylinders, muscles, and tendons. Newton, conjugate-gradient, and projected Gauss-Seidel solvers, plus Euler and Runge-Kutta integrators, provide options for different simulation needs. MJCF XML and its built-in compiler support model definition; the product description also lists URDF model loading. Interactive visualization is available through native OpenGL, with multi-threaded sampling and finite-difference approximations among the additional capabilities.
MuJoCo is distributed as open-source software, with Windows, macOS, and Linux binaries and desktop or self-hosted deployment. A C API and Python bindings make it usable from code, and Python and Unity are listed as integrations. That combination should appeal to developers who want to build or connect simulation workflows across those environments without a priced hosted service. Documentation and community are the listed support channels. Choose MuJoCo for configurable dynamics and contact simulation; teams looking for a broader end-user product or a vendor-led support channel should consider alternatives.
