Mondo Rescue review
A specialized, open-source toolkit for Linux backup, cloning, and disaster recovery.

Mondo Rescue is open-source disaster-recovery software for Linux computers and servers. It creates backup archives and bootable recovery media, including ISO images, CD/DVD media, USB devices, tapes, hard disks, and NFS destinations. Its mondoarchive utility handles filesystems and system data, while mondorestore supports full-system and selective-file recovery. Administrators managing Linux infrastructure are the clearest fit, particularly when recovery media, cloning, or system-level restoration matters more than a broad desktop backup service.
The product’s strongest area is recovery depth. It supports automatic, interactive, compare, and expert restore modes, giving administrators several ways to approach a recovery job. Filesystem, LVM, and software or hardware RAID configurations are supported, along with bzip2, lzo, and gzip compression. PXE network restoration adds a path for network-based recovery, while backup verification helps check the resulting archives. These capabilities make Mondo Rescue suitable for disaster-recovery media creation and system cloning, rather than only copying selected files.
Mondo Rescue is free and open source under the GPL, with Linux and self-hosted platform support. Its focused scope is also its main boundary: it is designed around Linux administration and does not present verified integrations or ransomware protection. Buyers seeking a specialized toolkit for bootable recovery, selective restoration, RAID or LVM environments, and deployment-oriented cloning should consider it. Organizations looking for broader platform coverage, connected integrations, or ransomware-focused safeguards should choose a different backup product.
