Our verdict on Moa
Moa is an open-source Rust emulator and simulator for systems built around 68000 and Z80 processors. It supports Sega Genesis/Mega Drive ROM emulation alongside TRS-80 Model I and Computie system simulation, with partial Macintosh 512k support. Genesis ROM files are accepted through a command-line frontend. The project is best suited to developers and technically minded users studying Genesis internals rather than players seeking broad compatibility or a complete console recreation.
Its strongest feature is the built-in debugger. Instruction stepping, breakpoints, register display, and memory inspection give users direct visibility into program execution and system state. Moa also includes 68000 and Z80 CPU emulation, frontend window scaling, threaded emulation mode, and gameplay speed adjustment. These capabilities make it useful for examining how Genesis software interacts with its processors and timing, while its additional system simulations support a wider emulation and experimentation focus.
Moa remains an incomplete Genesis implementation. Some games fail to render or accept input, cartridge expansion memory is unsupported, and audio is not implemented. The published project description also does not establish save states, netplay, cheats, or shaders as available capabilities. Choose Moa for source-oriented exploration, processor-level inspection, and experimentation across supported systems. Users who primarily want dependable play across a broad game library, complete audiovisual support, or multiplayer features should consider an emulator with those functions explicitly provided.
