Mirantis Container Runtime review
A Docker-compatible runtime with enterprise support, security controls, and orchestration options.

Mirantis Container Runtime is an enterprise container engine for running and managing containerized applications across supported Linux distributions and Windows Server. It combines a container daemon, Docker-compatible command-line interface, and REST API with Dockerfile-based image building through BuildKit and Buildx. Teams standardizing on Docker-compatible workflows can also use Docker Compose, while orchestration options include Kubernetes through cri-dockerd and Docker Swarm. Its positioning fits organizations that need a supported runtime for business-critical deployments rather than an open-source or no-cost engine.
The published plans show two annual, per-node support subscriptions. Basic 8x5 Support 1Y costs $1,125 per node annually and includes a Linux or Windows Server edition with 8x5 basic support. Enterprise 24x7 Support 1Y costs $2,250 per node annually and includes the same platform choice with 24x7 enterprise support. There is no free plan, so the pricing model is aimed at organizations prepared to budget for commercial support across their nodes. The main paid-tier distinction is support coverage, making the Enterprise plan more relevant where continuous support is required.
Platform fit is a central strength. MCR integrates with Mirantis Kubernetes Engine, Mirantis Secure Registry, Kubernetes, Docker Swarm, and Docker Compose. Security-oriented capabilities include rootless container operation, image signing, Docker Content Trust enforcement, and a FIPS-validated cryptography variant. The runtime interface is containerd, and supported host environments include Oracle Linux, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Rocky Linux, SLES, Ubuntu, and Windows Server. Choose MCR when Docker compatibility, Windows support, orchestration flexibility, and enterprise support matter together. Organizations seeking a free or open-source container engine should consider another option.
