Our verdict on MinecraftFirewall
MinecraftFirewall is a self-hosted Windows reverse proxy and firewall for Minecraft Java servers. It is designed for administrators who want a control layer between players and backend servers, particularly on networks that need traffic filtering, account checks, and centralized server management. The project supports multiple backend servers and is distributed under the MIT license, with Windows installer and ZIP releases.
Its security feature set is the main reason to consider it. MinecraftFirewall can block VPN and datacenter IPs, limit connection rates, score bots, inspect Minecraft packets, block malformed packets, and apply machine-wide Windows Firewall bans. Protected usernames and Microsoft-account verification add identity controls for offline-mode servers, while allowed-domain and crawler blocking target unwanted automated access. An optional server plugin can hold unauthenticated players before they reach a backend server. These controls make it a strong fit for administrators prioritizing filtering and access management over a general-purpose proxy.
Platform compatibility is practical but specific. The proxy supports Paper, Spigot, Vanilla, ViaVersion, and ViaBackwards, with proxy protocol and BungeeCord IP forwarding for network configuration. It supports Minecraft 1.20.2 through the newest release, with protocol tables 764–775; older clients can connect through ViaVersion or ViaBackwards. A Windows control panel covers server profiles, protection settings, players, blocked IPs, activity logs, and service operation. Choose MinecraftFirewall if Windows hosting and self-managed security controls fit your network. Choose another option if you need a proxy that runs across operating systems or serves broader game and infrastructure workloads.
