Our verdict on Minecraft Datapack Language

Minecraft Datapack Language (MDL) is an open-source language and command-line compiler for creating Minecraft Java Edition datapacks. It is aimed at developers who want a scripted workflow, particularly VS Code users working with multi-file projects. MDL compiles source into Minecraft .mcfunction files and adds JavaScript-style syntax, including variables, expressions, explicit scoping, if/else statements, and while loops. Projects can be organized by namespace, with automatic merging during the build process.

MDL is available across Windows, macOS, and Linux, and its tooling fits a code-first development environment. The CLI supports building, checking, and creating projects, while the VS Code extension provides syntax highlighting, IntelliSense, error checking, and build commands. Registry references cover recipes, loot tables, and advancements, helping source files connect to those datapack resources. Output can be produced as a ZIP archive, with an option to retain directory output, and datapack validation is part of the published feature set.

The main trade-off is scope. MDL is centered on compiling scripted source into .mcfunction files; references to external recipe, loot table, and advancement JSON files do not constitute generators for those resource files. That makes it a strong fit for users who prefer JavaScript-style control flow, project structure, and editor assistance, but a less suitable choice for workflows seeking broad generation of every datapack resource type. Choose MDL for an open-source, CLI-and-VS-Code development process; choose an alternative if resource-file generation beyond functions is central to the project.
