Milvus review
A deep, flexible open-source choice for demanding vector and hybrid search workloads.

Milvus is an open-source vector database for GenAI applications and similarity search. It suits teams building retrieval-augmented generation, image search, multimodal search, and large-scale production systems that need more than a single vector representation. The database stores dense, sparse, and binary vectors alongside structured metadata, giving developers a broad foundation for search applications. It supports Linux, macOS, Windows, self-hosted environments, and API-based workflows, with SDKs for Python, Go, Java, Node.js, and C++.
Search depth is the main reason to consider Milvus. Approximate nearest-neighbor search is complemented by multi-vector hybrid search across multiple vector fields, keyword-oriented sparse search using BM25 or sparse embeddings, scalar-expression metadata filtering, and reranking through Reciprocal Rank Fusion and weighted scoring. Teams can choose among multiple vector and scalar index types, including HNSW, IVF variants, DiskANN, SCANN, FAISS, GPU options, and sparse indexes. This breadth makes Milvus a strong fit when retrieval quality, filtering, and index selection matter together rather than as isolated requirements.
Deployment options range from Milvus Lite for embedded local use to standalone Docker deployment and distributed Kubernetes deployment. That range supports experimentation and production architectures, but self-hosted teams remain responsible for operating the chosen environment. Milvus itself is free and open source; a separate fully managed cloud service is available through Zilliz Cloud. Choose Milvus if you want open deployment, extensive vector types, and detailed control over search architecture. Teams seeking a narrowly focused hosted service with less infrastructure responsibility may prefer a separate managed option.
Milvus pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Supports dense, sparse, binary, hybrid, filtered, and reranked search
- Runs locally, with Docker, or across distributed Kubernetes deployments
- Offers broad index coverage and SDKs for Python, Go, Java, Node.js, and C++
- Where it doesn't
- Self-hosted deployment places infrastructure and operations work on your team
- Its broad index catalog can make architecture decisions more involved
- Managed cloud is provided separately through Zilliz Cloud
