Our verdict on Migaku

Migaku brings language study tools to video, webpages, books, and flashcards. It suits learners who want to work with native media and reading material while building vocabulary, rather than relying only on a conventional course sequence. Interactive word lookup, dual-subtitle options, OCR, and card creation connect study to material learners choose themselves. Beginner and structured courses are also available for selected languages, with progress tracking and comprehension scoring.

Its standout fit is turning viewing and reading into review. Migaku lists integrations with YouTube, Netflix, Disney+, Viki, and Anki. Learners can create media-rich cards from lookups and revisit them through spaced repetition; study cards also support text-to-speech and native-speaker audio. OCR extends the workflow to physical or image-based text, including books, e-readers, menus, and images. This breadth across media makes it a better match for learners who already want to study through content than for someone seeking a narrowly structured speaking course.

Migaku runs on web, iOS, and Android, with a Chrome extension for browser-based study. The published plans show Migaku Standard at $10 per month, Migaku EA at $15 per month with early access to new features, and Migaku Lifetime at $499 one time with lifetime access. A 10-day free trial is offered, but there is no free plan. The trade-off is clear: choose Migaku if subtitle-based lookup, OCR, and flashcard review are central to your routine. Look elsewhere if dedicated pronunciation practice is essential; Migaku says it has no such tool, though native-speaker audio can support shadowing.
