Microsoft Purview Insider Risk Management is a compliance solution for organizations that need to detect, investigate, and respond to malicious or inadvertent internal activity. It is suited to Microsoft-centric security, compliance, and investigation teams handling sensitive-data leaks, departing-user data theft, risky activity, and policy violations. The service runs through the Microsoft Purview portal and combines configurable policies, risk indicators, alerts, user risk scores, content investigation, and escalation workflows.

Pricing is presented through the Microsoft Purview Suite at $12 per user per month, billed annually. That suite includes Data loss prevention, Information protection, Insider risk management, Audit, eDiscovery, and Communication compliance. The suite requires Microsoft 365 E3, or Office 365 E3 plus Enterprise Mobility + Security E3. Insider Risk Management also supports pay-as-you-go billing for some indicators. Teams already operating across Microsoft 365 can connect it with Microsoft Graph, Defender XDR, Sentinel, Entra ID, eDiscovery Premium, the Microsoft 365 HR connector, and Azure. Integrations also cover Box, Dropbox, Google Drive, Amazon S3, and ServiceNow.

Its strongest area is the investigation workflow: configurable policies and templates feed user risk scoring, risk-score boosters, an alerts dashboard, triage tools, and case management with assignment, notes, filtering, and status tracking. Content Explorer helps review related files and messages, while privacy controls include pseudonymization, role-based access, and audit logs. Escalation to eDiscovery Premium and sharing with ServiceNow extend response workflows. Choose it when Microsoft ecosystem fit, exfiltration detection, departing-user monitoring, and structured case handling matter. Teams needing native coverage beyond the web should consider a product with broader platform support.
