MicroMDM review
A free, open-source Apple MDM server for teams comfortable running their own infrastructure.

MicroMDM is an open-source, self-hosted mobile device management server for Apple devices. It is aimed at developers, enterprise teams, and education deployments that want to operate Apple management infrastructure themselves. The product exposes Apple MDM commands and device data through an authenticated API, with command-line administration through mdmctl. Its scope covers Mac and Apple device management, including enrollment, configuration, application delivery, remote commands, and FileVault-related management.
For Apple enrollment and lifecycle control, MicroMDM connects with Apple Business Manager for device enrollment and synchronization and uses Apple Push Notification service for device check-in and command delivery. Administrators can store and deploy configuration profiles, deliver signed packages and applications, define blueprint-based enrollment actions, schedule remote MDM commands, and support FileVault key rotation. This gives technically oriented teams a focused set of core Apple MDM capabilities without a hosted service layer. The API-focused design is a fit for custom workflows and self-managed platforms, but it places setup, operation, and administration responsibilities on the team running the server.
The main consideration is the project’s current direction. MicroMDM v1 is in maintenance mode, with no new feature work planned, and the maintainers recommend migration toward NanoMDM and related Nano projects. That makes MicroMDM more suitable for developers who specifically need its existing open-source, self-hosted foundation or are planning around the recommended migration path. Teams seeking a hosted management experience, a built-in web interface, or an actively expanding MicroMDM v1 feature set should choose an alternative. For teams comfortable with command-line administration and operational ownership, its free model and Apple-focused API provide a clear starting point.
